Nash appeared shortly after Hernandez left, stone-faced. He spent the next hour helping Liam and Nikki go through everything Nash and Joyce had tried in order to find her kidnapper. Joyce had done such a good job of blocking out his face she couldn’t remember enough details for a good composite sketch. Nash explained that he and Joyce had spent countless hours going through missing persons files, trying to find any of the girls she remembered being in the house. Nash had hoped that finding one or two of the other victims would back up Joyce’s story, and he would be able to open a formal investigation. But nothing had worked, and Joyce had been ready to give up, but Nash had convinced her that Nikki’s skill as an investigator and knowledge of the area could help them find her captor.

“I assume last night wasn’t the first night she was supposed to stay with you when you came to town,” Liam had asked. “Why didn’t she tell these people she wouldn’t be home?”

“She told me she’d call when she got off work because they’d be sleeping, and she wouldn’t have to listen to Sonia worry about her being out at night.”

“Was there tension between them, then?”

“Nothing serious,” Nash had said. “Joyce never had a bad word to say about either of them. She had her opinions on Tony, but it wasn’t anything nefarious, including about Tony’s buddy. She saw the guy twice, the second time leaving the house. Right out the front door.”

“What about Sonia?” Liam asked. “It’s pretty clear that Tony wasn’t aware she knew about Logan.”

“Joyce just said that she was positive that Tony was hanging out with this guy, and she had no clue if Sonia knew. She figured it was none of her business, anyway.”

Nikki worked through the timeline in her head. “Sonia said she’d woken up at five thirty a.m. out of a deep sleep and knew something was wrong.”

She glanced into the living room. After Hernandez left, Tony gave them Logan’s contact information and then disappeared upstairs. Sonia remained on the couch in the parlor, staring into space. “You guys keep going through stuff. I’m going to talk to Sonia again.”

Sonia didn’t seem to realize Nikki was in the room until she spoke. “How are you holding up?” She sat down next to her on the couch.

Sonia’s light brown skin appeared sallow, dark circles beneath her eyes. “I think I’m really just numb right now.”

“I understand,” Nikki said. “Waiting for news is the most hopeless feeling in the world.”

Her dark eyes focused on Nikki. “But you found your little girl.”

“We will find your son and Joyce too.”

Sonia reached for another tissue. “I wanted to be there when he was born. That sounds so selfish but it’s true.”

“It’s not selfish at all,” Nikki said. “You’re his mother.”

“I can’t believe Tony didn’t tell me about the background check,” Sonia said. “I know he meant well and thought he had the bases covered but…” She choked back a sob.
